The first tenant in the redeveloped Birmingham Electric Battery Co. building in downtown Birmingham is expected to open in early August.

Classes at True40 Fitness Studio will start at the redeveloped office and retail complex called The Battery at 2201 2nd Ave. S. on Aug. 6. A grand opening celebration is set for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 2.

Other previously announced tenants Birmingham District Brewing Co. and Gus’s Fried Chicken are expected to open in September and October, respectively, said developer Ward Neely, of Electric Birmingham and SRS Real Estate Partners.

Syndicate Lounge pulled out of a deal to locate at The Battery. The nightclub was trying to relocate after losing its space in Five Points South to an apartment complex.

Classic 13 Tattoo is also relocating from Five Points South to 2107 2nd Ave. S., about a block from The Battery.

Neely said other tenants will be announced soon.

True40 Fitness Studio’s downtown location is the fitness center’s fourth location and its first franchise.

Kaitlyn Bentley left the corporate world to manage True40 Fitness Studio’s Cahaba Heights location in 2016. She worked with the fitness center’s founder Allie Weingarten to open the downtown location.

“Downtown Birmingham doesn’t have a ton of fitness studios, so I think this is a good opportunity to give residents and people who work down here something unique, something they can do and head back to work,” she said.

Bentley said the fitness studio has showers and parking lot.

She said its exciting to be a part of the revitalization of downtown. “We love that it is a historic building and we get to be a part of it,” Bentley said.

True40 Fitness Studio provides a total-body, low-impact workout for all ages and fitness levels focusing on core strengthening.

In downtown, True40 will offer 30 classes Monday through Saturday as well as childcare for children ages infant through 10 years during select class times. The first week of classes will be free.

“We are thrilled to have our first tenant opening at The Battery. True40 embodies everything we were looking for in potential tenants,” Neely said. “Their innovative approach to wellness is refreshing and they will be an excellent complement to an exciting lineup. With District Brewing opening right around the corner, this will give you multiple reasons to come to The Battery and stay around for a while.”
