Toppers Pizza to move into former Moon space on Berry Street

DFW.com’s Preston Jones has been relating the news that former Berry Street bar/club the Moon will not re-open next to the Ridglea Theatre, as had been planned. Moon owner Chris Maunder told Preston that he’s moving forward with plans to re-open the Moon in another location, but added that he could not move back to the old Berry Street location that closed Dec. 30, because the landlord found a new tenant.

Now we know who that tenant is. SRS Real Estate Partners announced today that Toppers Pizza, which sure has a lot of sound effects on its website, will move into the old Moon space at 2911 Berry St., just east of the original Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Toppers’, which has roots in Champaign, Ill., and is mostly active in the Midwest and North Carolina, is now looking to conquer the rest of the pizza-eating world. Its menu includes build-your-own pizzas, grinders, wings, quesadillas and specialty pizzas (I can’t link directly to each item, but click the link and then search out the Mac ‘N Cheese pizza — whether you think it’s genius or a sign that the Mayans were right, it’s a litmus test to how much you’ll look forward to the place).

My immediate impression was that the menu resembled that of Mellow Mushroom, which has a location not too far from Berry Street on Bluebonnet Circle, but closer study reveals that the menus are a little more different, although still not exactly for pizza purists. Toppers is moving into a place a mere block or so away from Crazy Jay’s Pizza, and not too far from Buffalo Bros. Pizza, Wings & Subs and the TCU-area Perrotti’s Pizza. Somewhat more prosaically, there are a Domino’s and Pizza Hut nearby. And that’s not to mention all the non-pizza food joints around there. It’s almost like there’s a bunch of hungry college kids down there or something.
