Rediscovering Downtown

Sometimes we do not see the forest for the trees. We are just too close to the action to see the bigger picture and what is truly going on.

Such was the case on a recent Saturday night when my wife and I-along with two Houstonians, who are in fact indigenous Dallasites-attended a wedding reception at the Nasher Sculpture Center. The reception was quite the event; the venue, the people, and the celebration of the happy couple. What was just as impressive was the abundance of nighttime activity in Uptown and downtown Dallas, particularly at The Ritz, The Crescent, Sambuca, Morton’s, and on into the Arts District.

There were at least three other events transpiring on that lovely Saturday night: another wedding reception at the Dallas Museum of Art, a party at the Belo Mansion, and an art-related event at 1807 Ross across from the Fairmont Hotel. There were a lot of people, a lot of hustle and bustle, and action in every direction.

Our Houstonian friends were amazed at what has happened downtown since their days in Dallas in the 1970s and ’80s of heading to Casa Dominguez on a Saturday night to be greeted by Pete at the door flanked by photos of Darrell Royal, Cowboys heroes, and, of course, Willie. My how times have changed. Seeing the Meyerson, Winspear Opera House, and Wyly Theatre, along with the construction of Woodall Rodgers Park, was truly an eye-opening experience for them. And for us!

The events of the evening, highlighted by the marriage of the children of lifelong friends, reconnecting with folks from our college days, and experiencing the great contributions Dallasites have made to the city makes me proud to live here. I am grateful to be in the real estate business, where relationships create opportunities for Dallas to continue to grow, to prosper, and to become a truly great American city.
