Syndicate Lounge, Birmingham District Brewing Co. and Gus’s Fried Chicken plan to set up shop in a new downtown Birmingham redevelopment project.
The former Birmingham Electric Battery Co. building on Second Avenue South is being redeveloped into an office and retail complex called The Battery. Construction is set to start by the end of the month, said developer Ward Neely, of Electric Birmingham and SRS Real Estate Partners.
Neely said this project is key to connecting the nightlife in Midtown with what’s happening in Lakeview.
“I think Second Avenue South is about to be a really cool area due to its walkability,” he said.
Construction includes the remodeling of an existing 25,000 square feet and the addition of 5,000 square feet.
Neely said the building was built circa 1910. It’s been unoccupied for a number of years, he said.
“There are some historical components of that building that we don’t want to let go,” Neely said.
Neely said he expects tenants could be ready to move in around March.
Neely said 6,000 square feet of office space remains for lease. Another 2,000 of retail space is close to be leased, he said.
Syndicate Lounge Owner Aaron Greene was forced to find a new location for his music venue when it was announced this summer that its Southside location would be demolished to allow for a new mixed-use development. This new development will consist of roughly 60 apartments and a national restaurant.
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is based in Mason, Tenn. This will be the restaurant chain’s first Alabama location.
